Patricia Moffitt Obituary

Patricia Ellen (Leonard) Moffitt
May 11, 1941 – January 22, 2026

Patricia Ellen Moffitt, known to many as Pat, passed away on January 22, 2026. She was born on May 11, 1941, in Waukegan, Illinois, to James and Edna Leonard.

Pat spent more than 60 years living in Windsor, California, after earlier residing in Long Beach. A lifelong learner, she earned an Associate’s degree in Science from Santa Rosa Junior College. She married Robert Moffitt on July 25, 1959, and together they built a life centered on service, family, and a deep love for animals.

Pat was the devoted mother of Melady Moffitt and the proud grandmother of Shelby Geremia and step‑granddaughter Brandie Wilson. She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Winter Geremia and James Angell.

Professionally, Pat owned and operated Michelle’s Boarding Kennels and the Empire Livestock Center before changing careers in 1986 to serve Sonoma County. She worked as a Community Service Officer with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, where her dedication and compassion made a lasting impact.

Pat was widely respected for her lifelong work with bloodhounds in law enforcement and search and rescue. Beginning in 1980, she trained bloodhounds and worked on more than 700 cases over the course of her career. She trained bloodhounds with numerous departments throughout Northern California and in Ireland. In addition, Pat was an approved judge for multiple dog performance and working-dog organizations.

Pat is survived by her brother, Michael Leonard (wife Donna); her nephew Patrick Leonard; niece Loriann Leonard Mallory; nephew Sean Leonard; and many beloved grand‑nieces and grand‑nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert Moffitt, and parents, James and Edna Leonard.

A service will be held Thursday, February 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Shiloh Cemetery, officiated by Warren Hays, Chaplain of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sonoma County Animal Services or to the donor’s favorite animal rescue organization.

A Celebration of Life and a memorial honoring Pat will be arranged at a later date. Additional information will be shared when available.
