John Watts Podboy, 81, passed away on July 22, 2025, at his home in Kenwood, California, surrounded by his family. Born in York, Pennsylvania, John was raised by Dr. August John Podboy, an ophthalmologist, and Harriett Watts Podboy, a devoted mother and homemaker. John attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania before serving with distinction in the United States Navy as a UDT Frogman and Navy SEAL, where he developed the values of courage and perseverance that guided him throughout his life.
Following his military service, John continued his education at San Diego State University and the University of Arizona where he earned his PhD and pursued a career in forensic psychology, a field where he made a lasting impact. John’s career began as the staff psychologist at Sonoma State Hospital, and he moved to Kenwood in 1975 where he would live the rest of his life. He consulted with numerous counties including Sonoma and Napa and was known as a trusted expert witness in criminal trials across the country, while continuing to consult individual patients in need. John was a frequent speaker at national and international conferences where his work was shared with colleagues.
Those who knew him well enjoyed his spontaneous sense of adventure. He enjoyed exercise and outdoor activities and never stopped pushing himself physically. Friends and neighbors would see John training for the annual Kenwood Fourth of July footrace, riding his mountain or hauling his boat for a weekend of high-speed thrills. He also had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and loved snow skiing.
John’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his son, Matthew Podboy; his daughter-in-law, Kelley Podboy; and his three grandchildren, Ava, Jack, and Braden Podboy along with his stepchildren, Emily Lamb and Patrick Huston and their families. He is also survived by his brother, Ron Podboy, and sister, Kathleen Whitney and will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews, his first wife, Carolyne, and his second wife, Kathleen.
John, or “Papa”, as he was affectionately known by his grandkids, will be remembered for his sharp mind, sense of humor, generous heart, and the love he shared with those around him. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. A private service will be held by the family.
