Betty Huntoon, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at the age of 93, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Los Angeles, California, Betty dedicated her career to public service, retiring as a Financial Manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District after a distinguished career in Southern California. Following retirement, she and her late husband, Earl W. Huntoon Jr., moved to Pioneer, California, where she enjoyed a fulfilling life filled with family, friends, and her many passions.
Betty’s marriage to Earl spanned 59 years, a testament to their enduring love and companionship. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Huntoon-Cowden and Karen Huntoon; her daughter-in-law, Raelene Huntoon; and son-in-law, Jack Cowden. She was predeceased by her sons, Richard Huntoon and Michael Huntoon. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Beyond her family, Betty’s life was marked by a remarkable spirit of adventure and community involvement. A lifelong bridge player, she seized any opportunity to gather with friends and family for a game, teaching generations the finer points of competitive Shanghai Rummy, a family tradition cherished to this day. For over 10 years, Betty and Earl shared a passion for sailing, exploring the California coast. Her dedication extended to serving as a valued member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where she instructed classes in safety and seamanship, coastal navigation, and served as a crew member on a Channel Islands search and rescue team, ultimately achieving the rank of Flotilla Commander. Her competitive spirit also shone brightly on the golf course, where she participated in tournaments across California and served on the Board of Mace Meadows golf course in Pioneer, holding various positions in Northern California golf associations.
Betty’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of dedication, service, and a deep love for family and friends. Her warmth, wit, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A private memorial will be held with the family. In lieu of flowers, please remember your time with Betty and raise a glass to toast a life well lived.
